Taking a Closer Look at the 2021 Toyota C-HR
Overview
The C-HR is far from ordinary, with an impressively styled cabin that brings out the bold styling of the exterior. The already impressive suite of safety features has seen an upgrade for the 2021 model year, with the addition of a wide variety of driver-assist features. A new Nightshade Edition appearance package has also been added to the lineup. It’s available on the XLE trim and blacks out much of the exterior trim, as well as adding 18-inch wheels.
Engine and Fuel Economy
All variants of the C-HR feature the same 2.0-liter I4, naturally aspirated engine, which sends power to the front wheels by way of a CVT automatic transmission. A responsive throttle adds joy to the driving experience, and the engine makes 144hp and 139lb-ft of torque. However, where the C-HR really shines is when it comes to fuel economy.
The C-HR has an EPA fuel rating of 27mpg when driving in the city, and 31mpg when out on the highway. However, in real-world testing, the C-HR smashes all its rivels with up to 37mpg over 200 miles of driving.
Interior and Cargo Space
The C-HR boasts a high-quality interior, benefiting from durable materials that add to the driving experience. An upscale, faux-leather dashboard with stitching provides a touch of class, while diamond patterns on the plastic fittings add a bit of fun. Dual-zone climate control covers the generous five seats, which have no problem fitting large adults in the rear seats. These fold down to provide plenty of extra cargo space.
Technology and Infotainment
All variants of the C-HR come fully equipped with an 8.0-inch touchscreen, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto equipped as standard on all models as are Sirius XM satellite radio and Bluetooth phone and music connectivity. In addition, a generous 4.2-inch instrument cluster display is provided as standard. The audio system has six high-definition speakers.
The touchscreen relies on uncomplicated menus to remove driver distraction when out on the road, with a minimalist aesthetic that’s easy to use when on the go, even for users without extensive technological experience.
Safety and Driver Assistance
The C-HR is an exceptionally safe car, earning a coveted five-star rating, the highest available, from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and performing very well in Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash tests. A variety of driver assistance technologies are available as standard across the board, including automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning and lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control.
