The trails get progressively more challenging the further one ventures into the system, with steeper uphill sections and some fast descents. Start on the Reservoir Parking Connector trail, then cross a bridge to enter the trail system proper on the Middle Gamehaven trail. The total length of the system is just under 8.5 miles. 3. Kaplan's Woods Situated almost exactly due west of Rochester, Kaplan's Woods offers tight loops of newly built, family-friendly singletrack that also includes some challenging climbs. At just over 5 miles in length, it's a fairly short distance overall, but still makes a good workout, with lots of steep climbs that make the most of the landscape, with those steep climbs also come steep descents, so make sure those brakes are in top condition! 4. Cherry Hill Plowline Trail This trail gives riders a wonderful view of the Mississippi River as it curves over high bluffs and through dense forests. The trail is broadly divided into 4 sections, separated by the main road that cuts through the center of the four quadrants. The trails broadly follow the edge of the thick forest, or the plowline, and rise and fall with the prevailing terrain, although none are particularly steep and the trail is usually rated easy to intermediate. Overall, the trail covers just over 6 miles, with beautiful overlooks of the Stockton Valley. Some of the trails are easy to walk, with low hills and flat areas along the river. Other trails are for more experienced hikers. These include steeper hills and some climbing. People of every fitness level will be able to use these trails. Camping Sleeping out under the stars is an excellent option at the park. The park has 74 campsites, each with a picnic table, a fire pit, and a grill so your family can enjoy meals cooked at your site. These sites are perfect for tent sleeping. The park also has 12 RV sites where you can park your camper or motorhome. Campsites do not include electric or water, but heated bathhouses are available with flushing toilets and free hot showers, so you and your family will be able to stay clean and fresh. Fishing Don't forget to bring your fishing pole when you are staying at the campground or visiting for a day of hiking. You can fish from the rocky shoreline or go out on a fishing boat. Steelhead, rainbow trout, and chinook are commonly caught. Education Various educational activities are available at the park throughout the year. You can learn about tracking animals, foraging for edible mushrooms, and other great information about the world outside. Register for these programs before your trip. Wildlife While you are hiking and camping, keep a lookout for wildlife. You are likely to see beaver, deer, elk, and raccoon. You may even catch a glimpse of a black bear or a cougar. Sandy River The river is one of the highlights of this park, so be sure to spend some time on the water during your visit. You can go swimming or explore the river on a canoe or kayak. Floating down the river in an innertube is a fun activity for families. Naturalist Naturalists are available for tours on the trails and for asking your questions about the park and the animals that live there. Ask about the availability of a naturalist on your visit for an even deeper understanding of this natural environment. The city of Rochester, MN is surrounded by a multitude of lakes, rivers, and streams that offer some of the best fishing spots in the state of Minnesota. The many rivers nearby are particularly good for trout fishing, so why not grab your fly-fishing gear and head out for a day by the water? Or, if fly fishing's not your thing, then head to one of the many lakes within a short drive of the city where there's sure to be the perfect spot for you. more 1. Bear Creek Reservoir Located just seven miles to the east of Rochester on Highway 14, Bear Creek Reservoir is a great place to fish for bluegill and largemouth bass, of which there are large populations present. You can also catch black crappie and channel catfish here, either from a boat or from one of the many fishing piers that surround the lake. There are a few specific regulations for the reservoir. The combined possession limit for sunfish, crappie, and yellow perch is 10, with no more than five crappie, the possession limit for both large and smallmouth bass is one, the limit for trout is three, and for northern pike, you can only have one at any one time. 2. The Whitewater River Part of the driftless region that runs through neighboring western Wisconsin and northern Iowa, this tributary of the Mississippi River is located to the south of Rochester, with many access points along its course. The water is remarkably clear and is full to the brim with stocked rainbow, brown, and brook trout. Most of the access points are in the various state parks along the river, but local anglers report having more luck when wade fishing. The main river tends to have a larger population of rainbow trout, whereas the middle branch is better for brook trout. 3. Silver Creek Reservoir Opened to fishing in 2007, silver creek reservoir is located just to the east of Rochester, and contains great populations of large and smallmouth bass, black crappie, perch, and bluegill. There is even a small population of northern pike in the lake. A public parking lot is near the lake, and there are plenty of places to fish along its shores. The hours of fishing are limited by the local township, so make sure to check for local signs around the lake. The catch and possession limits are in effect here as well, but do be aware they also apply to fish you have at your campsite or home. 4. Trout Run Creek As its name suggests, this small creek near the town of Lanesboro is 12 miles of dense trout fishing, with over 3,000 fish per mile. As well as the original wild brown trout, there is also plenty of stocked brook trout. The best places to fish are along the stretch from Saratoga to the Bucksnort Dam, which has the highest fish concentration of the creek.
