3 Engine Problems You Should Always Get Fixed at Your Toyota Dealer

The thought of engine problems is a stress for any driver. Fortunately, in Rochester, MN, your Toyota dealer is on hand to fix any of these problems for you. Most problems can be easily and inexpensively repaired if they're identified as soon as they develop. These are a few potential problems that we can repair in your engine. more 3 Engine Problems You Should Always Get Fixed at Your Toyota Dealer Worn Ignition Coils As every driver knows, an engine depends on the ignition of fuel and air to create combustion. These controlled explosions take place in the engine cylinders. Once the fuel-air mix is correct, it's compressed in the cylinder by the upward movement of the piston. At the height of compression, the spark plug attached to the cylinder will ignite the mixture. The spark plug, however, depends on an ignition coil to supply the necessary power. An ignition coil is connected to each spark plug. The coil generates 30,000 volts of electricity which the plug uses to ignite the mixture in the cylinder. Ignition coils can burn out over time, and they can fail due to damage by other components. A failed ignition coil will prevent combustion in the cylinder it's connected to, and your engine will misfire. We'll remove the damaged coil and fit a new one to fix this problem. Worn Radiator Hoses Coolant is pumped through your engine to reduce the temperature. Your engine operates at a high temperature due to combustion, and the heat it generates has to be removed as quickly as possible. The coolant transports the heat from the engine to the radiator, where the heat is removed by heat exchange. The radiator is connected to the cooling system by two thick rubber hoses. Radiator hoses are designed to withstand high temperatures and high pressure, and they regularly transport coolant at temperatures over 300 F. We routinely test your hoses during your engine services to ensure that they are supple and in good condition. The heat and pressure can cause the hoses to crack and leak coolant if they aren't regularly examined. If one or both of the hoses are worn, we can install a replacement very quickly. Starter Problems Few problems are more frustrating for any driver than your car refusing to start. The starter is responsible for cranking your engine, which starts the combustion process. You can identify the starter as a potential cause if you listen when you try and start your car. If your starter is working correctly, you'll hear a click when you press the start button. If you don't hear a click, your starter motor could be causing the problem. Our technicians will; examine the starter and repair or replace it. If you have any problem with your engine, call us right away at Rochester Toyota.

How to Tell When Your Toyota Needs a Brake Repair

Brakes are one of your car's most important safety features. They allow you to control your speed and stop whenever you need or want to. In time, parts can break or get damaged, and you'll need a brake repair. If you're having a problem with your brakes, your Toyota dealer can help. These are some reasons you may need to have your brakes checked. Signs You Need a Brake Repair at Your Toyota Dealer Worn Brake Pads Your braking system depends on friction to slow and stop your car. The brake pads fit inside the calipers, and the calipers are pushed against your wheel rotors when you apply the brakes. The pads have a thick friction material covering, which produces friction when it's in contact with the smooth rotor's surface. Each time you use your brakes, part of the friction material flakes off. The friction material covering on a brake pad is 1/2" thick when it's new. This will degrade over time, and when the pad reaches 1/4" thickness, it's time for replacements. As a reminder, you'll hear a high-pitched screeching from the thin pads each time you brake. Replacing pads is quick, and our technicians can do this while you wait and enjoy a hot coffee. Leaking Brake Fluid Brake fluid provides the power that's required to stop your car. It exerts hydraulic pressure on the brake calipers, which forces them against the wheel rotors. Your braking system is highly-pressurized, which can turn even a small leak into a problem. Brake fluid can leak from various places, including rusted brake lines, worn hoses, or a crack in the brake fluid reservoir. As fluid leaks out, the pressure in the braking system will drop. This pressure drop will make it difficult to apply your brakes. Our technicians are highly trained in finding and plugging leaks, and can swiftly trace the problem. Once the leak is identified, we'll repair it and refill your brake fluid. Soft Pedal A brake pedal should provide resistance when you step on it, and the resistance should increase as you apply more pressure. The resistance is generated by pressurized brake fluid. If you step on the pedal and feel little resistance, you have a brake problem. The lack of resistance from the pedal could be caused by a brake fluid leak, as we saw above. It could also be caused by an air bubble in the braking system. The brake system is sealed, but air can find its way into anything over time. An air bubble can form on the brake hose and prevent the fluid from generating the required pressure. Our technicians will need to investigate to find the problem. Don't risk driving with worn or damaged brakes. Call us today at Rochester Toyota.

Time for New Tires? Visit Your Rochester Toyota Dealer

If you want to keep your family and others safe on the road, it is vital to ensure that your tires are kept in tip-top condition. Simply performing visual checks is not enough, and you could suffer from a dangerous blowout if your tires are not up to scratch. Are you wondering if it's time to visit your local Toyota deale r to get new tires? Read on to discover some of the signs to look out for. more Time for New Tires? Visit Your Rochester Toyota Dealer Check Your Tread If you are not sure whether or not you need to replace your tires, you can perform a simple test at home to check the depth of your tread. Experts stipulate that your tread (the grooves in your tire) should always be 2/32” deep or deeper. If you drive on wet or icy roads most days, you'll need tires with double that depth to give you a safe grip on the road and prevent any unfortunate accidents. This simple, at-home test is called the Penny Test. Push a penny into your tires' grooves, ensuring that Abraham Lincoln's head faces downward. If Lincoln's forehead disappears, your tread is at a safe level, but if the top of his head is sticking out, it's time to schedule a tire replacement service at your nearest dealer. Look for Sidewall Cracks or Bulges If you often drive over rough terrain like bumpy, potholed roads, you must check the sides of your tires for any scratches or hairline cuts. You may also notice that the sides of your tires are bulging. Cracks and swelling in the tires are signs that air could be leaking out, and this could seriously damage your suspension or cause a horrible blowout while you're driving at unsafe speeds. Inspect the Wear on Your Tires The wear and tear on your tires will also tell you if it is time to head to the dealership for some new ones. Getting rid of balding tires will give you better control for a smoother ride. If you notice that your tires are more worn in some areas than others, this could mean that you need to get your tire pressure checked. Newer tires have been created with built-in “tread wear indicator bars”. Depending on your car, these could be a good option for you. The indicator bars are implanted in the rubber, running in the same direction as the grooves of your tread. If you see the indicator bars poking through, it's time for a tire change. It is important to keep your car well-maintained so that it runs efficiently and safely. As we've discovered, the longevity of your tires depends on a number of factors. Generally, you should get new ones every 50,000 miles or so. If you need a tire replacement service or any other questions or concerns about your Toyota, get in touch with us at Rochester Toyota. Our friendly team will be happy to assist you.

Does Your Toyota Need an Alternator Repair?

The alternator is the heart of your electrical changing system. Its purpose is to produce the power to supply your car's electrical systems needs. The alternator works continually while your car is moving, and only shuts off when you switch off your engine. The hard-working alternator will eventually show signs of wear, and you'll need an alternator repair. As your Toyota dealer, we can help you with a repair or replacement. more Signs You Need an Alternator Repair at Your Toyota Dealer Dead Battery A potential sign of a weak alternator is a dead battery. If your battery is less than three years old and dies, the alternator is a possible cause. Your alternator is responsible for charging your battery. In normal circumstances, the power used by your battery to start your engine and maintain the electrical system will be replaced by the alternator. As your alternator starts to weaken, it will generate less power. This process may take time before its noticeable, as an alternator has surplus electrical capacity. The problem starts when the alternator isn't able to supply all of your car's electrical needs. Your electrical systems will receive less power, and the alternator won't be able to fully charge your battery. Without a continual recharge, your battery will die. Damaged Wiring The electricity generated by your alternator has to be moved to the systems that need it. This is accomplished by a network of cables and wires that spread throughout your car to transmit power. The hot, constantly-moving environment of your engine isn't an easy place for electrical wiring. The cables and wires are protected by thick plastic insulation and additional rubber protection. The wiring in your car, like all other wirings, can wear and break. A broken wire can't transmit electricity, and this will shut down the component it was supplying power to. The alternator, however, will continue to transmit power along the broken wire. The electricity will heat the wire, and this can cause the insulation to burn. If you smell the odor of burning plastic, your wiring is probably damaged. Battery Warning Light The battery warning light represents your car's electrical generation system. It's connected to sensors that monitor the alternator, the battery, and the electrical connections. These sensors continually send information to your car's computer, which makes decisions based on this information. This warning light can signify a problem with the alternator. The alternator generates 14.5 volts when it's healthy. If the alternator is under a full load, it will still provide approximately 13.5 volts. When a weak alternator produces less than 13 volts, the sensor attached to the alternator will inform the computer. A charge this low means the alternator is wearing out. Although this light isn't conclusively an alternator problem, we advise getting it checked ASAP. A weak alternator can cause numerous problems with your Toyota. If you have any of these signs, or your car doesn't feel right, call our service department at Rochester Toyota. Our Toyota-certified technicians can repair any problem for you.
