2021 Toyota Prius
For over twenty years, the Toyota Prius has delivered environmentally conscious drivers with an efficient ride, and it continues to do so for the 2021 model year. The latest model now comes with Android Auto, and the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 system can now read road signs, and it has an improved pedestrian detection system. There is also a special Prius 2020 Edition to commemorate twenty years of the car. Here is a look at the 2021 Prius.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
The entry-level Prius is the L Eco. It has 15-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, heated side door mirrors, and proximity entry. The LE adds a rear window wiper, and the LE AWD-e adds fog lights and unique wheel covers. The XLE comes with 17-inch wheels and it adds automatic headlights. The new 2020 Special Edition starts with the features from the XLE and adds blacked-out exterior trim elements, blacked-out 17-inch wheels, blacked-out headlights, and a rear spoiler. Stepping up to the Limited adds some interior upgrades and the option for a sunroof and 15-inch alloy wheels.
Engine (Power)
The hybrid powertrain for the Prius is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that works with two electric motors. The AWD-e versions of the Prius add a third electric motor that works independently from the hybrid system to power the rear wheels. Combined, the system generates a total of 121 horsepower.
Performance
The Prius has plenty of power for everyday driving, and it offers a smooth, composed ride. The three different driving modes allow the driver to choose a mode that makes the most of the conditions and maximize either fuel economy or performance. The choices include EV, Power, and Eco, with the Eco mode offering the quietest ride and the most efficient. Choosing Power mode increases the acceleration power.
Interior
The Prius has room for five passengers with comfortable seats for both rows. All passengers will have plenty of headroom and legroom, no matter where they sit. Standard interior features in the cabin include automatic climate control, cloth upholstery, and a 60/40 split for the rear seat. Moving up through the trims adds SofTex upholstery, a power-adjustable driver's seat, and heated front seats. The technology in the Prius includes a 7-inch touch screen and an infotainment system that works with Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, and now Android Auto. The Limited has an 11.6-inch vertically oriented screen, which comes with integrated navigation, satellite radio, and HD radio. Three USB ports come standard in the Prius along with a six-speaker stereo system.
Safety Features
All of the Prius trims come standard with the Safety Sense 2.0 suite along with a rearview camera. The group of driver-assist systems includes forward collision warning, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and automatic high beams. It also comes with pedestrian and bicyclist detection and a road-sign recognition system. Some of the available safety features you can add include front and rear parking sensors, a head-up display, a blind-spot monitor, and rear cross-traffic alert along with an active parking assist system.
